Aucuba are an evergreen shrub which are very similar to Prunus (Laurel), with leathery, variegated leaves.
The shrub is best suited to part shade or full shade locations, as in its native location by streams and in moist valleys. They also like all soil types except clay, and are happy in both exposed and sheltered locations.
Purple flowers appear on the plant in Spring, and red berries are produced on the female variants of the shrub, and are eaten by birds when they appear in Autumn.
Growing up to two and and half metres high and wide, the shrub is well suited to being placed in a position where it can be shown off.
