Bergenia – also known as Elephant’s Ear – is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial. It contains round leathery leaves and flowers in Spring to produce dense clusters of flowers.
All varieties of the plant suit full sun or part shade, though some varieties can also be grown in deep shade. They also like any soil and exposed or sheltered locations as long as the soil is moist with good drainage.
Many variants of the plant are hardy and can survive the coldest of winters, though care should be taken to check as some varieties are less tolerant of heavy frost. They also do not like extreme heat in Summer.
Propagation of the plant can be done via two methods; division of clumps or by planting a portion of the rhizome. In both cases, this should be done after flowering in Spring.
