Fothergilla is a dense, deciduous shrub which is typically bushy. It produces white bottle-brush style flowers in Spring and Summer which contrast sharply against the leaves. In Autumn, the leaves change colour to orange and red before dropping.

The shrub should be placed in full sun or part shade, and it prefers acid soil which is moist but well-drained.

Depending on the variant they can reach between one metre and two and a half metres in height after ten or twenty years.
