Hebe are a mixture of small and large leaved evergreen shrubs native to New Zealand and South America.
A number of varieties are popular with bees when the flowers appear, which is usually in Summer or Autumn.
The plant can be planted in sheltered or exposed locations, however care may be needed in Winter for exposed shrubs as they are only hardy down to minus ten. They also require full sun or part shade locations in any soil type.
The smaller leaf topiary Hebe is commonly used for shrubs which are to have a formal shape. Pruning is not required, but frost damaged or straggly branches can be removed in April or May. Drastic pruning can be a problem, particularly for smaller leaved varieties, so care should be taken when deciding how much to remove.
