Genista are a deciduous shrub and somewhat similar in appearance to Spartium and Cytisus.

In Summer, the plants produce pea-like flowers on mass while the stems – sometimes spiny – have small leaves. The shrub is usually compact and produces arching or trailing branches.

Positioning the shrub in full sun is important, as is providing well-drained soil. The site can either be exposed or sheltered, and the plant is generally hardy through the coldest winters.
