In a situation where a plant is needed for part or full shade, Leucothoe is one of the plants that will be generally be successful; as long as the correct variety is chosen.
The basic variety ‘fontanesiana’ is happy in sheltered or exposed positions in shade, and its only requirement is acidic soil. It is easy quite capable in soil which is poorly drained as it likes to be kept moist.
In Spring, white flowers appear which are attractive to bees. Some varieties also have interesting foliage which changes colour through the seasons.
Most common varieties of the shrub grow to around one and a half metres.
Propagation can be made using the seed produced, or by taking semi-hardwood cuttings.
