Skimmia is a particularly noticeable shrub with dark green leaves contrasting with (usually) bright red berries which appear on the female plants.

Planting can be made in part shade or full shade in chalky or loamy soil. Full sun can be tolerated as long as the soil remains moist. They are happy in sheltered or exposed locations and any soil pH.

Although the red berry versions are most common, there are also white berry variants. The berries appear in late Summer and Autumn when the female is pollinated from the flowers which show in Spring.
