Pilot

Bev is the chief stylist at HighLites salon and starts her Friday by shooing away Matthew who is attempting to sell the Big Issue outside. Checking her answer machine, she finds the "heavy-breather" has left a message again in between dealing with complaining customers. Customer Alice turns up for a last-minute appointment in the hopes of meeting her date in the evening who is revealed to be Nigel, which causes issues with Bev who believes he is behind the heavy-breather calls. Bev's attempts to dye a new customers hair goes quite badly and she ends up losing out when she undercharges. The suggestion that Nigel is behind obscene phone calls begins to spread through the village, with Alice cancelling her date and threatening to go to the police. Customer Enid is found to have passed out under the hairdryer and Nigel's attempts to resucitate her cause her to accuse him of theft when she finally comes around. Nigel turns up at a village dance to attempt a reconciliation with Alice, and reveals he is planning to leave his life behind for somewhere new. Enid also arrives at the dance after discharging herself from hospital, and reveals Nigel saved her life which sets Alice about reconciling with him.

HighLites

Episode 1

Bev is putting assistant Shirley through a hair dye and ear piercing as the business struggles to adapt to the changing needs of its customers. Shirley answers the phone to a man named John who Bev refuses to talk to, and also refuses to reveal who he is, as the pair revert to bickering due to their money woes. Elderly customer Enid turns up with her own money struggles though is hoping for a windfall before John turns up in the salon demanding his money owed by Bev with the threat of bailiffs. With the pressure of owing thousands, Bev takes to attacking Enid with equipment and dealing with Shirley's suggestion of joining her and her boyfriend in Las Vegas.

Episode 2

The hair salon is recovering from a fire in the bins and neighbouring flat, leaving Bev having to mop up the fire brigade's water until Shirley arrives. Customer Alice Cooper turns up with her husband Henry, with Bev hoping to talk Henry into using his role on the parish council to receive a hardship grant though Henry's suggestion is that the damaged flat owner will receive most of the money. Another phone call from John also puts the squeeze on the situation, with his demand for the money shes owes by the end of the week. The police are also now believing that the fire was an arson attempt with a fire investigator being sent out.

Episode 3

John is refusing to extend her deadline with just two days left to pay the debt. Bev meanwhile has to carry on with business as old school foe Diane Renshaw turns up in the salon to gloat about the state of the business. She is also in a relationship with County goalkeeper Billy who is due to retire at the end of the season, and is looking for a business to invest in. Despite the animosity, Bev senses an opportunity as Diane accuses her of changing her tune rather quickly. News however of her debt to John has already reached Diane, while Bev becomes particularly nervous when a police officer turns up in the salon, while Diane also has plans for when Bev goes out of business.

Episode 4

Bev and Shirley have their statement on the fire taken by police officer Wendy with Bev continuing to try and deflect attention away from herself. Meanwhile, the vicar Harriet also turns up in the salon for a haircut as she prepares for her first sermon. She is also talked into offering a service for a dead budgie who died in the flat and also finds herself on the end of an argument with Bev about religion. John turn up outside the salon taking measurements, and with the pressure on, Bev spots another opening when Harriet reveals that the church offers hardship funds though the meetings are chaired by John's mother. Flat owner Nigel also announces that the police have a witness and expect to make an arrest.

Episode 5

With the bailiffs due, Bev has Shirley sign a document handing over the business to her just in time for John to turn up. An angry John threatens to turn her in before staying for a haircut as he attempts to turn Shirley against Bev. John's mother Hillary also turns up in the salon having been tipped off about his business practices and is worried about his mental state after his wife has left. Wendy turns up in the salon as well, with questions about the fire and as John begins to tell his story, his mother manages to contradict his 'evidence'. With Bev saved, she sets about regaining her salon from Shirley as she convinces her to take her partner to Lanzarote for a holiday.

HighLites Retouched

Episode 1

Bev and Shirley are heading to see client Belinda having become mobile hairdressers when Shirley blocks the drains, leading the salon to be closed for a week. With Shirley's boyfriend Graham away for a week, they take to using his new van without telling him which Bev manages to crash into a parked car. The pair are also hoping to win £300 in a quiz which Bev is hosting and feeding the answers to Shirley who will be participating, though she is struggling to remember the correct answer. Bev also becomes upset with Belinda - a doctor - who refuses to spill the beans on joint acquaintances before an emergency call about a car accident has Bev and Shirley making a quick escape before the police arrive.

Episode 2

Heading to a care home to visit another client as Shirley continues to worry they will be caught by the police and how she is going to handle the situation with Graham. Bev immediately gets into trouble with care home superintendent Anthony for calling it an "old folks home", as they look for client Enid. Eventually getting to her room, they find her in a cantankerous mood after having dropped her shopping when encountering a van beeping its horn - which happened to be driven by Bev - and is expecting a visit from the police after she catches part of the number plate. Anthony soon catches up with Bev and Shirley with news that the police have a breakthrough.

Episode 3

Shirley is proving hard work with her inability to remember the quiz answers as the pair head to see Mr Butt. On the way, they move a sign outside the accident spot asking for witnesses before heading into the Post Office where he works, who is himself intent on finding out who caused the accident. Bev attempts to head him off by asking for the surveillance footage taken outside the shop, though Bev suggests he is using the situation to aid his political aims, before taking to spilling a drink over the machine and convincing Mr Butt's assistant Matthew to quit to prevent him going against his principals. As the police arrive at the shop, Bev manages to make off with the external hard drives.

Episode 4

Finding themselves at the police station to cut police officer client Wendy's hair, Bev begins to worry that Shirley will reveal their secret. Trying to rearrange the appointment to prevent having to go into the station, they succumb with Wendy due to be married to colleague sergeant Gordon who Bev suggests is giving her a promotion because of their personal situation while she is looking to take over his cases including the hit-and-run. Gordon meanwhile arrives back and is still hopeful of catching the van driver as Bev tries to deflect and misdirect with her own opinions on the case. Gordon also manages to upset Wendy by suggesting she might not be up to the job of reviewing the hit-and-run evidence.

Episode 5

Bev is in a bad mood as Shirley fudged the quiz answers as the pair head to cut the hair of Lucinda whose car they crashed into, and who also happens to be a magistrate. Managing to convince her to remove her neck brace, conversation immediately turns to the incident with Lucinda keen on seeing the person in prison. Shirley meanwhile is struggling with her guilt as the police are due to arrive with more information about who caused it. Sensing the net is closing, Bev concocts a story implicating Graham as the cause of the accident, and being an abusive partner to Shirley, in the hope of persuading Lucinda to drop the case and discrediting her.

HighLites Split Ends

Episode 1

Bev is stubbornly refusing to admit she wants to go to Nigel's wedding to Theresa despite not having received an invited anyway and is also upset Shirley has accepted the offer to go. Nigel arrives at the salon flustered and further upsets Bev when she finds out she isn't inline to cut the bride's hair with the work looking to go to rival Anton. Bev meanwhile ponders out loud to Shirley and customer Edith that Theresa may be pregnant despite Nigel reportedly keen to wait until the wedding night, due to her being repeatedly sick and having the wedding dress adjusted again. She also remains keen on getting the wedding hairdressing work by offering a steep discount.

Episode 2

With a temporary cashflow problem, Bev is under pressure from Shirley for her pay. Wedding planner Lois meanwhile turns up at the salon intent on cancelling the hairdressing booking for the wedding and returning the business to Anton's, though Bev refuses suggesting that the cancellation fee will be hefty and keen to talk her around. Their conversation ends up on the subject of Lois' visit to a psychologist with Bev keen to offer advice as well as Theresa's apparent pregnancy. Theresa's father Ronnie arrives at the salon and soon ends up firing Lois as Bev manages to scheme against her, resulting in a large argument and Bev coming out on top.

Episode 3

As Bev now has the role of wedding planner, she takes to negotiating the price of the meal over the phone before revealing to Shirley that she is doing the job for a fixed price, and any savings are hers. Her dealing has the fancy limousines changed for minibuses, and the wedding photographer cancelled. She also has to contend with Nigel's mother Elizabeth who tries to put her foot down with Bev, though also fails as she is convinced to have a trial haircut. With Elizabeth in the chair, Bev schemes her way to have Elizabeth award the contract to her while Shirley keeps Ronnie busy in the kitchen before repeating the rumour that Theresa may be pregnant and Nigel may not be the father.

Episode 4

Bev has cancelled the wedding florist due to the cost and considers sending Shirley to pick wild flowers. The salon receives a visit from vicar Harriet whose church will be used for the wedding ceremony and will also be conducting the service. Harriet is concerned with Lois who she continues to blame Bev for her current state. Bev meanwhile reveals she has cancelled the expensive choir and organist in favour of a CD player as the cost cutting continues. Harriet takes a seat for her hair being prepared, the two end up in a slight disagreement about the choice of music with Harriet threatening to prevent the wedding going ahead in the church, while the pregnancy rumour continues to spread.

Episode 5

The day before the wedding arrives with Shirley looking for advice on odd phone calls from Ronnie, with Bev keen on her keeping him sweet until the wedding is done. Theresa arrives in the salon complaining about the pregnancy rumours being spread around the village and all her original wedding plans in disarray. While having her haircut, Ronnie calls the salon and leaves a message explaining his feelings to Shirley while results in Theresa having a meltdown which requires Bev to put her powers of persuasion to work to prevent her cancelling the wedding. Problems also mount when Nigel arrives having discovered the pregnancy rumours.

HighLites Wash and Blow

Episode 1

Bev and Shirley are taking a five-day booze cruise to the Fjords with some of the village and Bev planning to operate her hairdressing on the captive crowd from her cabin. Enid has also joined them on the journey and immediately upsets Bev with her description of her upgraded cabin. Bev also overhears that Graham will be taking part in a song contest where the prize money is five thousand pounds and suggests she can help him win by becoming his manager, before contemplating international fame. As they get started with the haircut, the ships begins to hit strong waves which Enid is hoping to use to her advantage while playing at the roulette wheel, while Bev is caught by the onboard hairdresser Diane.

Episode 2

With calmer weather forecast, Bev has shifted her operation to Shirley's cabin where she reveals her gambling attempts have resulted in big losses after she borrowed from the shared kitty. Nigel arrives with news that he has been charged by the party to take charge of the money, though Bev manages to distract him with the promise of a hairstyle in the form of Johnny Cash. Bev's accidental bringing onboard some out-of-date sausage rolls also causes the captain to request information after Enid and Diane fall ill. With Bev under threat of being ejected from the ship, the pair have a race against time to get rid of the savoury snacks.

Episode 3

Shirley and Bev desperately hunt for the last remaining sausage roll to discard of it which Shirley can't remember the location of. Police officer Wendy meanwhile is hunting for Bev who materialises from her hiding location under the bed, to find that the discussion turns to money and Bev's refusal to hand over the groups share. With her back in a corner, Bev claims the money was stolen from her cabin though she hopes the person will return it before reporting it, much to Wendy's dismay. As Wendy continues to press the issue and contemplates bringing police officer husband Gordon involved, Bev attempts to redirect attention onto Diane.

Episode 4

Graham has eaten the dodgy sausage roll Shirley had left in the minibar fridge, which leaves Bev worried his performance in the song contest will be under threat. A message goes out over the loudspeaker for Bev to report to the purser's office, though Bev continues on with her haircuts as contest judge Julie arrives, with Bev hoping to influence her decision on the potential acts. However, despite her best efforts, Bev manages to upset Julie when she accuses her husband - the captain - of having an affair with Diane, with Julie threatening to report her illegal hairdressing business and let the purser know she he is hiding in Shirley's cabin - as Graham falls ill.

Episode 5

Captain Anderson arrives in the cabin with news that they should pack as they are being ejected from the boat at Trondheim. Bev however manages to convince him to have a trim as she insists that she has not received any payments for cutting hair, while suggesting Julie tried to blackmail her. The captain also broaches the subject of the food poisoning outbreak and the theft of the shared money pot, before accusing her of lying. Diane arrives at the cabin furious, where she wants to discuss with the captain about her contract being terminated, as their affair comes to the surface. Using the new information to blackmail the captain, Bev persuades him to pin all the blame on Diane.

HighLites Dye Another Day

Episode 1

Shirley has broken the hair clippers while cutting her dogs hair as the pair struggle for clients. Bev receives a phone call from Douglas Crawford at the tax office who is threatening further fines for tax owed, as she continues to try to avoid him. Meanwhile, Nigel arrives at the salon for a trim, with discussion turning to Theresa's friend Albert, who Bev claims owes her thousands of pounds, with Nigel taking on the role of executor of his sizable estate since he has now died and has no remaining family. Spying an opportunity, Bev suggests that she is the love-child of Albert and thus, his only remaining relative after claiming he broke the news to her years ago.

Episode 2

Enid is complaining about having to sit in the dark as Bev continues to hide from the taxman as well. Shirley lets drop the situation with Albert, with Enid being surprised and suspicious at the apparent news that Bev is claiming to be his daughter, as she goes on to reveal she was his girlfriend before getting married. Douglas arrives in the salon, with Bev claiming she is called Shirley and that Bev died last night. Not entirely buying the story that Bev is struggling to spin, she manages to persuade Nigel to avoid starting his investigation until after the supposed funeral. With the pressure mounting, Bev comes up with a plan to get a sample of Albert's DNA.

Episode 3

Rumour has been travelling around the village that Bev has died, though Harriet is relieved to find her alive. Harriet is keen to hear Bev's tale of how she managed to recover herself after a heart attack, as well as the situation surrounding Albert. As Harriet is keen to discuss the funeral arrangements which started before Bev's declaration of being Albert's daughter, she finds that Bev is keen on cheapening the service. The chatter turns to religion with Bev suggesting that the salon does more for the community than the church, with Harriet getting the impression that she is a pariah in the community. Attempting to make up for it, she decides on looking up Albert's family records.

Episode 4

Bev is complaining that she has never had any good luck in life as she continues to struggle to get a hold on Albert's money, while someone has spread the rumour around that Bev is going to donate her inheritance. American woman, Annabeth, arrives in the salon looking for her hair-styling with Bev spying the chance to charge a fortune to fix the terrible "damage" caused by the last stylist. Discussion turns to the salon being closed tomorrow to allow Bev and Shirley to attend Albert's funeral, with Annabeth going on to reveal that she will also be attending the funeral as Albert was her father-in-law. With Bev under pressure, she takes to putting carpet cleaner in Annabeth's hair.

Episode 5

The funeral goes ahead with Harriet being angered by Bev's song choices, before Bev heading to the travel agents to make plans for the inheritance. However, Annabeth has made a complaint to the police about the carpet cleaner incident with Wendy making an official visit to ask questions. Troubles also continue to mount as taxman Douglas arrives, though seems happy to wait when he discovers that Bev might be inline for a large inheritance on which tax will be due. Nigel arrives with news of the DNA testing in which Bev hopes to prove her claim, which reveals she is part dog while a will is found in Albert's mattress - with his estate being left to his dog.

HighLites Natural Bounce

Episode 1

Bev ponders offering Botox as a new treatment due to her "short-term liquidity problem". Mr Butt arrives in the salon looking to place a charity poster in the shop window, with Shirley already collecting several hundred pounds for a donkey sanctuary for completing a fun run, though Bev is not feeling charitable. Mr Butt also has problems with dodgy brother-in-law Daz requiring him to help him move some gym equipment, though the pair do not get along. Bev suggests the equipment is stolen which is why Daz is keen to sell it, though Bev spies a chance to open a gym upstairs in Nigel's former flat, though requires persuading Shirley to part with her charity money to pay for the equipment.

Episode 2

The gym equipment is being moved in which leaves Shirley struggling to concentrate due to the noise, with Harriet about to arrive for a haircut, resulting in Shirley beginning to panic in case she is asked about her charity money. Bev suggests she should take a politicians approach to answering any questions. Harriet arrives, as discussion turns to the new fitness branch of Bev's business and Harriet worrying it will affect her own Zumba classes which raise money for the church roof. Bev manages to turn the conversation onto the vicars love life and suggests the gym as the solution, though the prospect of Beryl Berkinson moving in to Nigel's flat poses problems for Bev's new venture.

Episode 3

Nigel is due at the salon in five minutes while Shirley's diet is proving a struggle as she prepares for the fun run. Nigel arrives, with discussion turning to his attempts to become a magistrate, though he is struggling with assertiveness as Bev forces him into the chair. He also discovers what is occurring in his former flat as the kickboxing class starts, as he suggests that the gym must go due to Beryl moving in. Tony's attempts to take the kickboxing class result in Enid being hit in the face, causing a kerfuffle and Enid wanting her money back, as an angry Nigel heads out to speak with the parish council and find a way to shut the gym down.

Episode 4

The day before the fun run and Shirley is struggling, while Mr Butt arrives to announce that the police are on the trail of the gym equipment after the caravan site arson caused by Daz. Police officer Wendy arrives at the salon as well, which leaves both Shirley and Mr Butt nervous, as she sets about looking into the gym equipment on behalf of the parish council and Nigel. Bev however manages to deflect attention enough to get Wendy in the chair for a manicure, however the treatment doesn't distract her enough, as she begins to look around. Getting Shirley on the treadmill to showcase the equipment, she ends up injuring herself on the treadmill and falling downstairs.

Episode 5

Shirley has managed to complete the fun run half an hour after everyone else, as Bev remains at the salon where the gym is finally turning a profit. Still struggling with the situation involving the donkey sanctuary money, Shirley attempts to persuade Bev to give her share back, as Beryl turns up in the salon where she discovers the existence of the gym. The paddling pool, a feature of the gym, springs a leak where problems compound as Wendy's report on the gym suggests the venue should be condemned. Gordon meanwhile ponders whether Wendy is interested in him again, as Nigel insists on inspecting the flat which he suggests is a death trap before the floor gives way before the paddling pool.
