Party's Over

Pilot

Henry Tobin, prime minister of the United Kingdom, has called a general election resulting in him losing his seat in a landslide loss. After eight months in charge, he leaves office as the least popular prime minister and sets about finding out what he will do with the rest of his life. After heading to India to get away from it all with wife Christine, the pair are also joined by protection officer, Jones. Back in England, after writing his memoirs, with Christine suggesting he write a book before building up his reputation again. He also has to cope with the attentions of personal assistant Natalie, who has decided to write her own book featuring the pair of them. Dealing with publisher PJ, Henry manages to receive an offer from her business rival and ex-husband Tony which starts a bidding war over the deal, which doesn't end well.

Series One

1. Road Trip

Henry and his wife Christine are off to a wedding in the Lake District which has been delayed due to Coronavirus, with Christine hoping their attendance will see the end of their social outcasting. An opportune interview with Emily Maitlis on Newsnight has Henry hoping to destroy fellow politician Chris White who has turned on him and began leaking messages about potentially damaging conservations and deals. Heading north, Henry is annoyed at the traffic which threatens his interview along with Jones who is stuck on the toilet at the motorway services, and then leaves his gun in the cubicle. Attempting to recover it after reversing down the motorway hard shoulder, the chance of Henry making his interview looks to be more and more unlikely when their car ends up in a police chase.

2. New Party

Henry is standing in for a radio host, though is struggling to get callers to ring in beyond his wife. He manages to criticise technology billionaire CEO and caller Scott Machin though gets another chance after some sucking up. Meeting Scott at a restaurant, the CEO announces he wants to disrupt politics by creating a new "common sense" party. Christine is less than pleased at the idea and threatens divorce if he gets back into the political arena, as she is dedicated to her own charity work despite not knowing much about it. With her position under threat, she sets about getting a donation from Scott who is notorious for refusing charities. After managing to sweet talk her way into a four million donation, she discovers something disturbing about Scott's political opinions on eugenics.

3. Parish Council

Having completed building his outdoor shed-office, Henry is feeling good about himself until he receives a letter from the parish council that his shed is too large and has been refused planning permission. Attempting to "work something out", his chat with the elderly head of the parish council has Henry contemplating running for chair himself. Christine suggests instead that she run for the position with people more likely to warm to her, though she quickly breaks from Henry's ideas. Natalie meanwhile sets about doing anything to win votes by cleaning out the rancid fridge of the fishmongers. At the evening hustings, Christine's speech goes over well though her previous comments on social media about the village come back to haunt her which has them plotting revenge with scurrilous claims.

4. The Great Outdoors

With I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here being the only television show willing to allow Henry on television, though Henry suggests they go camping to allow him to prove to Christine that he can manage the outdoors. Jones and Natalie tag along while Christine brings her essentials which includes a bunch of luxuries. Henry is left to forage for everything to build his camp and eat dinner, though hunting for hours yields no reward. As night draws in, Henry is confident on spending his night in the wild though ends up succumbing to Christine's mattress. The following morning, they discover that Jones appears unwell after eating mushrooms the previous evening, which sets the trio figuring out a way to get him to hospital which is made difficult by Christine killing the car battery.

5. Going Green

Henry is off to a job interview at British Oil in which he hopes to shill his way into the energy business. Christine is against it however touting her supposed green credentials while Natalie suggests playing up his contacts. Arriving at the offices, the group encounter an eco-protest and Henry's attempts to "reason" with them goes badly as does his interview. Henry's altercation with the protestors is recorded and gets misconstrued into him being environmentally conscious including a phone call from eco-influencer and former university friend Lizzie. With the Tobin Foundation promising lots of new income which starts with a lucarative speech on a private island to a large number of rich guests, Henry's presentation results in new embarassment and the job offer from British Oil being rescinded.

Series Two

1. Going for Gold

On the way to Birmingham on the train, Henry has been given free tickets for the Commonwealth Games, though is nervous about how he will be received. They encounter fellow politician Guy who has risen the ranks since Henry was prime minister though Christine is keen to use their time to get Henry on a sporting committee and back to meeting important people around the world, while Henry is more interested in talking to event organiser Barbara Beresford. Natalie sets about using her charm on Guy to discover his involvement in a scandal, while Henry gets himself involved in commentating on gymnastics despite knowing nothing. Jones meanwhile has taken a keen interest in Martina Navratilova and her tennis career while Natalie's continued attempts to ruin Guy ends up backfiring on her when she falls for him.

2. Cruise Control

Christine finds her newspaper column has been ended and fears Henry and herself are becoming irrelevant. Natalie however has managed to get Henry a place on a cruise ship lecture circuit, which is dismissed until Christine finds it is going to Reykjavik. Jones meanwhile sets about getting into shape for their trip which will take them through international waters and ends up injuring himself. On the boat, Henry finds his lecture is being given to seven people and proves to be a flop, resulting in him demanding to see the young, female captain who hates her job. Henry sets about ensuring he is the main attraction by preventing headliner Juan the magician from performing with Jones' help. The pair get caught by Juan after knocking out his tiger with Jones' painkiller pills resulting in Henry having to make up for the situation.

3. Changing of the Guard

Henry is assaulted while giving a speech at his old college. Being discharged from hospital, he takes to having Christine look after him while Natalie remains angry that Jones abandoned him while "tailing a threat". Christine sets about podcaster in the hope of making money and gaining attention. Jones' head role in security is replaced by protection officer Bobbi from MI5, while Natalie's role is also interrupted when his engagements are screened by Bobbi. Christine's interview with a vegan influencer is ruined when Bobbi refuses to let him in the house, while Henry receives an offer to go on Have I Got News For You which gets cancelled by Bobbi who is concerned for his safety by going on the show, and would much rather prefer Henry to go to the opening a waste reclamation site.

4. Sister Act

At Downing Street, Henry is sneaking in the back entrance for a meeting with special adviser Ian Andrews who offers him an appointment as a Lord. Christine is lukewarm to the idea and has her own complaints about not having been invited to an art gallery opening and believes they are being shunned. He soon receives a call that his sister Georgia has become a conspiracy theorist with Christine intent on making her prevent her interfering with Henry's chance of becoming a Lord. Setting about bringing her back to Earth with a visit to another art gallery where Henry attempts to pass her off as a performance artist. Back at home, Natalie attempts to disable the house internet access before attempting to talk to Georgia where she ends up falling for the spiel herself putting Henry's chance of becoming a Lord at risk.

5. The Crown

Henry is being played by lookalike actor David Furkin in The Crown who wants to visit for research purposes with Christine suggesting it is an opportunity for him to be viewed differently by the public. Natalie sets about packing Henry's diary with exciting events including skydiving. Christine gets an offer to be on Loose Women though Natalie's suggestion she reject it due to a lack of down to Earth attitude has her questioning her ability to connect with the average person. As David becomes more of a nuisance to Henry, Natalie seeks advice on how to write her own play about Henry's life while Christine tries to make use of him around the house. With Henry having to go to open a creche opening ceremony, he contemplates using him as a stand-in while staying home to watch Columbo, which goes badly wrong.

6. Heist of Commons

With the prices of everything going up, Henry ventures out to try and find his fortune. Conversation turns to Coindock which was suggested by former tech adviser Charlie Barber, with Natalie calculating that Henry's share may be worth 16.3 million pounds though it is stored away on a hard drive somewhere. Christine sets about using her potential new fortune for gain, while Henry heads to Westminster to search through a filing cabinet he believes may house the disk. Henry discovers his access pass has been deactivated and sets about sneaking in which results in them accidentally voting to bring back capital punishment as they attempt to steal a pass for Henry to use. Eventually managing to find the room of mothballed items, they eventually manage to find it but end up stuck until they are discovered by former colleague Rosie who catches Henry urinating into a mug.
