Faith is a freelance illustrator and divorcee who is preparing to step up her relationship with Bill who works as an art editor at a style magazine. However, he is yet to meet her two teenage children Hannah and Joe. Faith's best friend Hilary sounds a note of caution on the whole situation as Bill meets the entire family at a restaurant where he encounters acquaintance Grace who makes the situation difficult, and his ex-wife Liza who he works alongside which poses further problems for the couple. The changes in life also prove difficult for Bill to handle when he is told he will be attending dinner with Faith's parents and the family dog breaks an expensive Jardinière vase, resulting in the pair having second thoughts.
