The Maltby Collection
Rod Millet is the surprising new hire at the Maltby Collection museum. He begins his job just as director Walter Brindle receives news that the venue will be shutting in three months, though he his happy due to an early retirement. However, before beginning his first day, Rod has to contend with "mad bastard" security guard Des who is constantly suspicious and refuses to let him in. Walter later breaks the news to the other staff, but Rod takes it upon himself to try to stir the staff into saving the gallery.
At his mothers, Rod tells her that he has a new job, though she seems less than thrilled and more concerned about offering him a biscuit. Setting about arranging a march to save the gallery, however Walter, Julian and Prunella who are keen for the gallery to close decide on ignoring the protest. A football match against another gallery is also arranged to raise awareness. As well as a heavy defect for the gallery, Walter receives a letter which says that the decision to close remains.
Rod invites Prunella out for dinner... at the museum cafeteria as a show of support for the venue. Speaking with cook Stelios, Rod reveals he has a new plan to save the gallery. Curator Julian is also upset that Rod and Prunella begin dating, when he discovers them having dinner together. Both Rod and Julian each decide to perform a grand gesture for Prunella by scaling the side of Big Ben, though Julian's intent is to commit suicide while Rod unfurls a banner to bring attention to the gallery.
Walter hears that Rod and Julian's scaling of Big Ben has caused the government to reverse its decision to close the gallery. Depressed that his opportunity for redundancy has been scuppered, he decides on early retirement instead. Meanwhile, Julian sets about revealing his feelings to Prunella and also discusses applying to be museum director, though faces competition. Rod has to contend with a woman who wants him to support her baby which results in Rod's checked history being brought up.
Rod is left in charge of the museum while Walter, Prunella and Julian are aware at a conference. Almost immediately, Donatello's private parts are accidentally pulled off by cleaner Eva. Rod calls in a friend, Gus, who he met in prison to repair the statue without anyone else finding out. Continuing their work, they have to deal with a break-in attempt from two thieves that Rod also knew in prison who take to trying to steal the statue. They manage to complete the job in time for the return of Walter, Prunella and Julian.
A television company is shooting an episode for a show in the gallery. Julian and Rod also make their feelings clear to Prunella, though she does not reciprocate to either. She is however taken by lead actor and BAFTA winner Jeremy Noone while participating as an extra. This leads to jealousy from Julian and Rod who decide to drop their interest in Prunella. Meanwhile, Eva's husband dies leaving her free to pursue Wilf though he rejects her advances due to it being too soon.
Rod suggests to Walter that the problem with the museum is that it is not "sexy" enough. Meanwhile, Julian is still chasing after Prunella going as far as to ask her out, but he still faces competition from Rod who invites her to Blackburn to find the original museum heirs, and get them to lift the restrictive convenants on how the museum is run. Wilf is still not ready to begin his relationship with Eva, even though her husband's funeral has not yet happened.
Looking to force the Maltby's hand in loosening the covenant, Rod suggests they try to get the media on their side, with a Sunday opening to generate attention. Becoming Press and Communications Officer, he arranges a media event which turns out to be a flop leaving Rod humiliated. He attempts to ask Susie Maltby out, but she reveals she is seeing Walter. He also gets rejected by Prunella when she discovers she is second best to Susie, and decides on an offer from Julian instead. Eva also decides on taking Wilf out for dinner, and refuses to take no for an answer.
The gallery is now open on Sunday with the media coverage being surprisingly good. Rod decides that he is ready to commit himself. Prunella reveals however has agreed to marry Julian, much to Rod's dismay. While Walter is celebrating the business of the museum, his wife turns up and is suspicious of Susie. However, with the day going so well the museum has to be evacuated due to an unattended bag found in the womens toilets, which Des gets rid of by a controlled explosion causing destruction of a priceless tapestry found by Julian.
Walter's wife has left him which leaves him delighted, and he arrives at the museum in a great mood. Rod approaches him with the idea of getting children into the gallery to make it easier to obtain funding. Julian however is angered at the "dumbing down" of the art world, as well as with Des for blowing up his tapestry in the controlled explosion. However, a "Count the Dogs" competition for the children descends into arguing due to not being able to agree on what constitutes a dog at a committee meeting.
Rod finds Walter is no longer listening due to his infatuation with Susie, resulting in a negative impact on the museum. Des has also lost his nerve having to deal with the extra crowds, and again hands in his notice. Stelios is also struggling due to the decision to cancel a Greek exhibit. A commitee meeting also debates whether they should host a "History of Plumbing" exhibit which is suggested by Eva. Julian also has to deal with his mother who is questioning his decision to marry Prunella, who decides to test her feelings by sleeping with Rod. Meanwhile, Wilf and Eva's relationship is stating to blossom.
At the wedding of Julian and Prunella which is being held in the museum, Rod wonders whether the pair will actually go through with it. Des also takes to stopping Prunella's relatives from getting in, due to their lack of style. Walter also attempts to propose to Susie, but she says no due to the age difference, and ends their "fun". Eva also proposes to Wilf, but Wilf is unsure about their compatibility and is worried about Eva hearing her former husbands voice until he hears it himself. Walter, feeling depressed, finds that the museum has been voted Museum of the Year.
Rod has begun to see Susie Maltby, leaving Walter disappointed. Walter reveals to the team that the museum is struggling financially, and he is looking for voluntary redundancies, though targets either Prunella or Julian for the chop. Eva is also upset as she is now engaged to Wilf, who is procrastinating over setting a date, though they eventually settle on a wedding at the end of the month. In an attempt to help the museum, Stelios suggests they make more of his abilities by advertising his Greek food better. As Walter comes to terms with his life of loneliness, his wife decides to return.
Rod agrees to stand on the committee to choose whether Prunella or Julian will be let go. While Rod tries to find a third member to sit on the committee, he has to deal with Prunella who offers herself to him despite both their relationships. Rod manages to talk Eva into being on the committee. Prunella goes on to perform better in the interview, largely due to Julian's arrogance at having to apply for the role, and gets the job by unanimous decision. With Julian left irritated, and Susie heading out to see an old boyfriend, Rod and Prunella are drawn closer.
Walter warns Rod off Prunella suggesting it will cause trouble if he gets involved with her. Walter is also finding the change in Des being difficult, given that he is in therapy for his constant repeating of things. The museum is also having a problem with an alarm constantly ringing now that Julian is no longer around. Eva is nervous about an interview for the 'Cleaning Weekly' magazine, before her wedding reception at which Wilf doesn't arrive. Rod also has to deal with Susie running off to comfort another male friend, and ends up sleeping with Prunella.
Eva is upset at being jilted at the alter, and on returning to work finds Walter and Des both upset about things that were written in the cleaning magazine interview. Rod also debates asking Susie to marry him. At home, Julian has taken a bump on the head and is suffering from concussion, resulting in his memory being lost. Susie quickly rejects Rod's proposal saying that she wouldn't marry him if he was the last man alive. Meanwhile, Wilf apologises to Eva for being torn on his love for her, and asks for another chance.
Walter decides to hire Julian to work on an exhibition which will take him around Europe, and leaves Prunella angry that he will take her best works. Eva and Wilf have set another date for their wedding, which leaves Wilf finally happy. While driving Eva to the church, Rod ends up in a road rage fight with another driver, resulting in Eva missing the wedding. Rod, also disappointed that Julian got the exhibition job, is instead tasked with trying to revert Des back to his old self. Making up again, Eva and Wilf try to set another wedding date.
Walter is still wondering why Gloria is being kind to him, and asks Rod for his advice. Prunella also hears from Julian who is not having a good time in Europe, who has lots of complaints. Des is back to repeating himself and Wilf asks him to be his best man. The pair both make it to church and confirm their marriage. Talking to Rod, Prunella reveals she is pregnant with his baby. Susie also has a change of heart, and decides she wants to commit to Rod, who reveals his news. Prunella arrives home to find Julian has returned to which she also reveals her news.
