To Serve Man

Aliens arrive on Earth via a number of spaceship landings and eventually communicate that they come in peace in the hope of sharing their knowledge and technology with humans to better the world and prevent further catastrophes. However, there is some questioning about the motives of the aliens and whether they are really as altruistic as they seem. When they make an offer to return a selection of humans to their own planet to experience life on another world, the discovery of a book containing a cryptic language sets about a race to find out its content.

A World of Difference

Arriving at the security gate at work, Arthur Curtis begins to find his world confused when the guard refers to him as Mr Raigan. Managing to get in, he finds that his office has become a film set, where the director suggests that his name really is Mr Raigan, and that Adam Curtis is the character he plays. Becoming more disturbed at the revelations, Arthur sets about finding out the truth and get back to the world he knows, while the director suggests that he is suffering from a nervous breakdown from an ongoing brutal divorce.

From Agnes—With Love

Agnes, a powerful computer, is causing problems which director Ballard is now under pressure to fix in preparation for an upcoming space flight. Calling in programmer James Elwood, Elwood finds that another engineer Fred has spent the previous night attempting to debug Agnes and is in a bad way. Nevertheless, Elwood sets about getting to work on resolving the issues with Agnes though quickly finds that she is less cooperative when co-worker Millie arrives to hand over some documents and asks him out for dinner.

Perchance to Dream

Edward Hall is in attendance at a circus, and believes he is being followed. Desperate to escape, he soon finds himself on the Upper East Side in the subway station, unsure of how he got there and the time. Heading to see Doctor Rathmann, a psychiatrist, he eventually arrives at the doctors office in the hope of help. In the office, Edward begins to believe the secretary is the person who is following him, though the real secretary is unable to see anyone in the room. Heading into Rathmann's office, Edward hopes to finally get some help.

The Purple Testament

William "Fitz" Fitzgerald is serving in the Phillipines during the second World War. Ordering his men to secure a road in the face of an enemy in a strong position, he takes to promising each of the men that they will be back. However, in the back of the truck he begins to see strange glows emanating from the face of each man. He eventually comes to learnt that his new found skill is the ability to determine who will die soon which results in him being particuarly affected.

Printer's Devil

The Courier newspaper is suffering a collapse in business, with editor-in-chief Douglas Winter resigned to it eventually closing. Contemplating suicide, Douglas encounters a man who gets talking about business and offers his help. He provides Douglas with a Linotype machine which will allow The Courier to scoop the other newspaper and get the news out there first. However, Douglas soon discovers the impact of going into business with who he comes to realise is the devil.

Dust

In a small desert town, a Mexican man named Galagos is awaiting being hanged for killing a child while driving his wagon drunk. With the platform complete, a peddler named Peter Sykes arrives in town and offers to sell the sheriff the rope which will be used. Meanwhile, Galagos' parents also arrive in town in the hope of convincing the young child's family to withdraw their support for the hanging. Sykes meanwhile offers to sell a magic powder to Galagos' father which he claims can be used to save his son in exchange for a tidy sum.

The Jeopardy Room

Major Ivan Kuchenko, a KGB agent, is being watched in his hotel room by Commissar Vassiloff and hitman Boris. Believing that Kuchenko is going to defect to a western nation due to a recent regime change in their country, Vassiloff arranges a meeting to reveal that his intent is to see Kuchenko dead. However, Vassiloff believes himself to be an artist in killing, and sets about devising an elaborate plan which will kill Kuchenko rather than simply shooting him.

The Fugitive

"Old Ben" is beloved by the neighbourhood youngsters, and is visited by Jenny who considers him her friend. Getting away from her strict "aunt" Agnes, she wants Ben to help her be allowed to play softball with the boys in the local park. Agnes is later visited by two men who are looking for information on Ben in a conversation which is later overheard by Jenny. Setting about helping her friend, Jenny finds that there is more to Old Ben than she cover ever have believed.

The Silence

Talkative social club member Jamie Tennyson is annoying gruff aristocrat Colonel Archie Taylor, who is somewhat jealous of the attention Jamie is receiving while telling one of his stories. The colonel sets about making a wager - that Jamie can not stay silent for a year in exchange for one million dollars. Describing how the deal will work, Jamie is to be placed in a constructed room with microphones for the year, and must remain completely silent. Jamie agrees to the deal and a contract is drawn up with both men confident that they will win the bet.
